AI Card Identification

How RocketAI automatically identifies your cards, extracts metadata, and detects parallels and variants.

LAST UPDATED · 2026-05-01APP · 1.0+

Overview

When you upload a card image, RocketAI — RocketVault's proprietary AI engine — automatically analyzes both the front and back of the card to extract detailed information. This process typically takes 10–30 seconds per card.

What RocketAI Extracts

RocketAI reads and identifies the following from your card images:

FieldDescription
Player NameFull player name, properly formatted
YearThe card's release year
BrandCard manufacturer (Topps, Panini, etc.)
Set NameThe specific set or product line
Card NumberThe card's number within the set
Parallel/VariantSpecial versions (Refractor, Gold, Prizm, etc.)
Serial NumberNumbered cards (/25, /99, /199, etc.)
TeamPlayer's team
Rookie StatusWhether it's a rookie card (RC)
AutographWhether the card is autographed
MemorabiliaWhether the card contains game-used material

How Identification Works

Step 01

Image Analysis

RocketAI first reads all visible text on the card — player name, set logos, card numbers, and fine print. It analyzes both front and back images simultaneously.

Step 02

Card Database Matching

The extracted text is matched against the RocketVault Card Database — containing millions of known cards across all major brands and years. This pinpoints the exact card.

Step 03

Parallel & Variant Detection

RocketAI uses proprietary AI analysis to detect parallel and variant cards — identifying:

  • Refractors and chromatic variants
  • Numbered parallels (/25, /50, /99, etc.)
  • Color variants (Gold, Silver, Red, Blue, etc.)
  • Special inserts and short prints

Step 04

Confidence Scoring

Each identification gets a confidence score. High-confidence cards go directly to Ready status on the Available tab. Lower-confidence cards or special types (autographs, memorabilia, high-value cards) are flagged with an attention chip so you can verify them before listing.

The parallel-matching pipeline was retuned in April 2026 — disambiguation rules were expanded and the auto-match confidence threshold dropped from 0.85 to 0.75, so common parallels lock in cleanly and only the genuinely ambiguous cases land in the attention queue.

Verifying Cards in Available

Cards needing human verification surface inline on the Available tab — there's no separate review queue. Each flagged card shows a small blue eye chip on its row, and the AVAILABLE tab pill carries an eye sub-badge with a count so you always know how many cards are worth a look at a glance.

Cards get flagged when:

  • RocketAI isn’t fully confident in the identification (missing player, set, year, or card number)
  • The card appears to be an autograph or memorabilia card
  • A parallel was detected but the variant isn’t confirmed
  • The card’s estimated value exceeds your high-value threshold (default: $50)
  • Pricing fell back to a tier estimate (no exact comp match)

Resolving Flagged Cards

Step 01

Filter to Needs Attention

On the Available tab, click the Needs Attention chip in the filter bar above the inventory grid. Specific category chips (Verify Parallel, No Price, Missing Data, Inserts) narrow further.

Step 02

Click the eye chip

Tap the blue eye chip on any flagged row to open Quick Edit (or, on mobile, a bottom sheet listing the specific reasons with a Fix in Quick Edit shortcut).

Step 03

Fix and save

Quick Edit surfaces the parallel picker, price override, insert flags, and missing identification fields. Hit Save — RocketVault re-runs status checks; if the last reason resolves, the card auto-promotes to Ready in the same transaction.

Power-user keyboard flow

For long queues after a bulk upload, click Focus Review on the Available tab to launch the keyboard-driven workspace (A approve, S skip, F flip, ← → navigate, Esc close). The active filter carries through, so a category-scoped chip plus Focus Review = a tight queue of just one type of issue.

Accuracy Tips

To get the best identification accuracy:

  • Clear, well-lit photos — Avoid shadows and glare
  • Both sides — Always include front AND back images
  • Flat surface — Don't photograph cards at an angle
  • One card per image — Don't stack or overlap cards
  • Full card visible — Make sure no edges are cut off

Note

RocketAI's accuracy improves over time as it learns from your corrections. Cards from popular modern sets (Topps, Panini Prizm, Bowman, etc.) have the highest accuracy rates.

Common Questions

Can RocketAI identify vintage cards? Yes! RocketAI can identify cards from the 1950s onward, though accuracy is highest for modern cards (2000+) where the RocketVault Card Database has the most comprehensive coverage.

What about graded cards (PSA, BGS, SGC)? You can upload photos of graded cards. RocketAI will identify the card inside the slab. You can manually add the grading information (grade, certification number) in the card detail page.

How does parallel detection work? RocketAI uses proprietary AI technology to analyze card images and cross-reference against known parallels in the RocketVault Card Database. It can identify refractors, holo effects, color borders, and other visual markers that distinguish parallel and variant cards.

Continuous AI Enrichment

RocketVault doesn't stop at the initial scan. Behind the scenes, AI agents continuously work to improve your card data — enriching descriptions, verifying identifications, and keeping your inventory up to date with the latest catalog information.

This means cards in your collection get smarter over time. New variants are discovered, descriptions are refined, and data quality improves — all automatically, with no action required from you.

Always Improving

RocketAI's enrichment agents run in the background using leading AI technology. Your card data is continuously refined and enhanced — the longer a card is in your collection, the richer its data becomes.
